Information and Resources on Gender Equality and Gender Research in Norway

Culture, Religion & Sports

In Norway, only recently has gender equality come onto the agenda in cultural policies and policy-making. For example, attention has recently been trained on the gendered distribution of public funding for moviemaking, which historically has favoured men.

Religion is part of Norwegian culture, although secularisation is taking place. Immigration has also changed the picture and challenges both traditional culture in Norway and views of women and men in relation to regligion and tradition. Religious symbols such as the veil and the question of honour related violence are on-going issues which are also relevant from a gender perspective.

Today, as many women as men participate in regular physical activity. But their membership in sport organizations, their involvement in different sports, their representation as coaches and administrators, and the support they receive, both from the public and from sponsors, varies considerably.
