Norway's Foreign Minister and Minister of International Development congratulate Nobel Peace Prize winners
The Nobel Committee awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize to Professor Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank. The Grameen Bank created a microcredit model that is being copied all over the world. The Nobel Peace Prize 2006 recognises the relationship between peace, development and gender equality. The Norwegian Minister of International Development states: "The Grameen Bank is represented throughout Bangladesh, and 97 per cent of its total of six million borrowers are women. This says a lot about what the bank means to poor women."

Norway concerned about Shirin Ebadi’s human rights centre
Press release: Norway is concerned by the decision on the part of the Iranian authorities in the beginning of August 2006 to declare the Centre for Defence of Human Rights in Teheran illegal. Shirin Ebadi won the Nobel peace in 2003.

Giske wants to ratify the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions
The Norwegian Minister of Culture and Church Affairs, Trond Giske, wants Norway to ratify the convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In the preamble it is stated that; Emphasizing the importance of culture for social cohesion in general and in particular it’s potential for the enhancement of the status and role of women in society. Article 7 in the convention is also relevant in a gender perspective: "Parties shall endeavour to create in their territory an environment which encourages individuals and social groups: (a) to create, produce, disseminate, distribute and have access to their own cultural expressions, paying due attention to the special circumstances and needs of women as well as various social groups, including persons belonging to minorities and indigenous peoples."

The greatest of all is love – on Norwegian family and equality policy
Speech by State Secretary Kjell Erik Øie, Ministry of Children and Equality, under the celebration of the international Day of the Family in Barcelona. The State Secretary presented his views on a number of issues including new family constellations in Norway, co-habitation, same sex partnerships, equal parenthood, and custody of children. He concluded that “enabling lesbians and homosexuals to live their love-life with persons of the same sex without fear of sanction is an important family policy principle. This means taking the extended concept of the family seriously."

Political parties – a route to power

The Minister states that "... one of the most effective ways to make sure women have a place in politics is with the use of quotas by the political parties. In Norway political parties has used this since 1975. This has also led to the fact that since 1989 the different governments have adapted the unwritten rule of ensuring that at least 40 % of the ministers are women."

General Statement by the Norwegian Minister of Agriculture Terje Riis-Johansen, Norway, at the 33rd Conference of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, 19 - 26 November 2005. The Minister state that  “women play a crucial role in agriculture in developing countries, and gender equality should be mainstreamed into all FAO activities", and that Norway is concerned about “the small number of female professionals in FAO. We suggest that FAO sets goals for improvements and gives the membership an update on the gender balance of professional staff at subsequent conferences."

Gender Equality and Access to Factors of Production
Speech by State Secretary Anne Margareth Fagerthun Stenhammer, UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Conference, Rome 21 November 2005, in which the State Secretary stated that “...women do not have equal access to productive assets. In many countries, they do not have the legal rights to own the land they till. This means no ensured right to use the land. No way to inherit it. No way to register it. No way to borrow money to invest in it. No means to participate on equal terms where the important decisions are made. This is a set of challenges that does not only affect poor women - often it affects poor people in general."

Answer to EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA), which requests information from the Royal Ministry of Children and Family Affairs regarding different aspects of the Norwegian legislation. The Norwegian Parliament passed an act about gender representation in public limited boards in December 2003.
