Every other what?
(20.06.2008)
I have been to academic parties, also in gender research contexts, where the guests have been placed man woman respectively. Are there no other ways to place guest? Is gender or sexuality the most important? How does one know who wants to be "woman" and who wants to be "man", and what does one do when the guests’ self performance violates the expected. When do old ceremonies become discrimination?
I have through the years read numerous gender scientific articles and books where the words sexuality, love, family, parenthood exclusively have been about heterosexuality, without the established presumptions even being discussed. I have read anthologies that intend to present the gender scientific research field, but more or less skip the queer theoretical contribution. When does what Margareta Lindholm has called heterosexual ignorance change to hetero sexism or pure homophobia? Where is the border between inferior scientific craft and pure oppression?
I have through the years read numerous polemic articles written by critics of gender research, who have felt compassion for male students and researchers wellbeing within different gender scientific environments, but I can’t remember any of them ever showing interest in the students and researchers who through their way of presenting themselves and/or through their research concentration violate the hetero normative. And have they ever devoted a thought to the serious working gender researchers of all genders who year after year are forced to meet angry as well as ignorant attacks from the press?
My examples are about students and researchers who in one way or other challenge the hetero norm, and about the research concentration that studies the social significances of sexualities. It would have been as easy to find situations where students and researchers with another cultural background than Swedish have reason to feel left out. Is intersectionality just a word one uses for formal speeches or when writing research applications?
